Book Genre: High Fantasy
Title and description: Sleight of Spirit, book 1 of the Athele Series The Athele series is a high fantasy epic with elements of magic, multiple planes, alternate universes, and a rich mythos. It is set in variable places, but centers mainly on a classic fantasy setting, also including flashes of steampunk, sci-fi, and even the earth we ourselves inhabit (or something quite similar to it).

Melissa Dolloy is a young healer, quickly rising in renown throughout the countryside. But her bright future is doused when she is possessed by a demon. Adopted by a man she hates and unable to even speak her name as any but Morgan, the former healer struggles against those who wish to own her, those who wish to love her, and worst of all, the demon that claims her soul.

Sleight of Spirit will be published in winter of 2012. Please stop by The Athele Series blog, follow, and leave a comment!

There’s not a lot that can pass for #Fantasy, #scifi, and #horror #writing inspiration, but this one can: alien moon. I like this one in particular because the cover of my soon-to-be released novella has a moon on it.  Yes, I will be sharing that soon.

Here’s a shameless pitch for my author page The Weathered Journal. This is the site where I compile my personal writings, articles, and photography. I’m getting close to finishing my first novella, THE PRINCE OF GRAVES (a heroic fantasy story), and I’m trying to get this site more exposure since that’s where I’m going to be posting excerpts and updates and the like. Give it a look?

For this week’s Sample Sunday I thought I’d share another piece of my WIP THE PRINCE OF GRAVES.  It’s a fantasy novella that is a prelude to my other fantasy WIP SHADOWS AND BONES. Although the below is a draft, I’d love to hear feedback, good or bad.  I hope you enjoy.

THE PRINCE OF GRAVES

Frey was aware of the sound of a roaring wind.  Not just the sound, but he felt it upon his skin, which although cold, was far warmer than the inside of his body. He felt frozen, colder than the waste land he had fought in. With a start he opened his eyes.

He lay upon a bare patch of rock that lay in the midst of a great river, the shores of which were so far removed on both sides of him that he could barely make them out as darker borders to the inky, frothing waters.  The water was black and powerful, racing by at great speed toward a terrible precipice so wide that the ends could not be seen. The sky above was pitch, as was the sky beyond the falls.  Frey could not tell how he was able to even see the landscape around him, as there was no moon or sun or stars.

He was not alone. Quickly he stood, and turning away from the mad, frothing waters he faced a dark cowled form.  The robe was brown, but about the waist was a silver belt.

“Is this the land of the dead?”

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

For #SampleSunday, an except from my #fantasy novella THE PRINCE OF GRAVES

This is still draft material, so will likely undergo an overhaul before it hits the virtual shelves (still planned for November).  I really hope to look for beta readers toward the end of October.

THE PRINCE OF GRAVES, which is a prelude to my other work in progress SHADOWS AND BONES, details the culmination of three years of war between the kingdom of Valeot, the last of the Remnant Kingdoms that rose in the wake of the fall of the ancient kingdom of Maledine over 1000 years before the novella takes place, and the Necromancer Kingdoms.  The primary characters are the sons of the king, four princes who lead the armies of the kingdom in what has shaped up to be the final effort of their enemies to conquer them.  The aftermath of this conflict sets the stage for SHADOWS AND BONES, so although it won’t be necessary to read PRINCE before SHADOWS, it will introduce the reader to the world, the mythology, and some of the characters that play roles in the coming novel.

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy the sample.

WE

THE PRINCE OF GRAVES

When the devils rise and the living wail

The dead reach out, cold and pale

The days of men shall falter and fail

Entombed forever beyond the veil

No hope, no rest, no power to save

The wicked day dawns as the noble day wanes

The light and life of the kingdom fades
    When all kneel down to the Prince of Graves
